Report on Maize and Poultry Field Day
FNN, an implementing partner, completed to provide training on poultry and maize farming techniques to 4,075 farmers in 12 districts, 35 communes, 182 villages were trained in these above subjects. 2,061 farmers trained in maize farming and financial literacy and 2,014 trained in poultry and financial literacy. There are more 50% of the total participant farmers are women (58% of total poultry farmers are women while maize female farmers are 54%. So, more women involved in poultry farming.
FNN organized maize and poultry field day event on June 19, 2025 at Koh Sotin commune, Koh Sotin district, Kampong Cham province for promoting the effective development and enhancement of maize and poultry practices, community involvement, and overall growth within the agriculture sector. There were 184 participants, who are involved in the agriculture activities, especially in maize and poultry farming, participated in the field day event of which 64 (35%) are women. They are Director of AC Department, Representatives of PDAFF of Prey Veng, Koh Sotin District Governor, Chief of Koh Sotin Commune, representative of ADB, SVN Country Director and Staff, representatives of De Heus, FNN project team, CACA representative, AC executives, and maize and poultry farmers.
During the event procession, there were some keynotes presented to the participants. They are Welcome Speech by FNN, Reflections and Future Outlook by SNV, Private Sector Perspectives and Knowledge on Value Chain Development by De Heus, Keynote Speech by ADB, and Opening Remark by MAFF. They stated their comprehensive ideas related to the Climate-Resilient Farming and Supply Chain Development to Support COVID-19 Recovery for Smallholder Poultry and Maize Farmers project funding by ADB-De Heus. They expressed their efforts and commitment to the sustainable agriculture development through making agriculture value chain system work better. This has always encouraged community members in agriculture production, they have wanted to do.
The plenary discussion gave an important opportunity to share best poultry and maize farming practice with the participants. They believed that the new techniques they used is actually increase corn yield to 13 ton per hectare higher than they applied their ancestors’ techniques. Meanwhile, the poultry framing methods have really reduced the chicken death rate and raising period. This is an evident of the outcomes of the project implementation.
We also learned from the project and the event that the project get success with active participation of community members and commune heads and support from authorities and technical institutions at all levels. This collaboration has led to the smooth implementation of this training project according to plan; b) This project demonstrated the implementation of MAP principles in the public, private, producer (farmer) sectors and made farmers understand their business development partners.
Mr. Chea Sangdona, Director of Department of Agriculture Cooperative Development, MAFF, welcomed the results presented by Mr. Pan Sopheap and the plenary discussion. He was also proud and sanctified with the farmers who applied the techniques to increase poultry and maize yields up to 13 ton of corn per hectare. He proposed the farmers share this experience with their neighbors in order to be strong together. He also expressed that MAFF still continues to support agriculture policy development and infrastructures (including GAT, Agroecology, agriculture supply chain, MAC, etc.) and to strengthen instructional development and capacity build at all levels (e.g. deploying communal agriculture officers, etc.) for accelerating implementation of the agriculture production, access to finance, market linkage, agriculture food processing.
After the field day event, FNN team conducted reflection meeting to assess the arrangement of the field day. We observed in term of the following aspects: 1) the poultry and maize farmers, who were informed, actively attended the event on time, although directors of Kampong, Tbong Khmum, and Kandal PADAFF were recalled in their absence; 2) at community level, FNN worked hard to properly prepare the event including logistics and documentation; 3) FNN observed and asked some farmers, we are interested in the event that we found all stakeholders work together and are committed to keep agriculture development as priority; 4) FNN learned the experience of organization of big event at community level, where we face the communication, event venue, facilities, accommodation, irregular decision the top management, etc.; and 5) the event was proceeded in subject to the planned schedule and its objectives. All participants look happy, trustful, and were hopeful about the outcome of the event.
Finally, he thanks FNN and SNV for bringing many participants to attend the big field day event in Koh Sotin commune, Koh Sotin district, Kampong Cham province, thanks all participants for active participation in the event, and gave special thanks to ADB and De Heus for always supporting the project in term of grant as well as loans, and then he declared the event close in the same day.
