5 Years of Achievements in Transforming Cambodian Agriculture
The Asia Pacific Farmers Program (APFP FO4A) has brought about a real and lasting change for smallholder farmers in Cambodia from 2021 to 2025. Implemented by the Farmer and Nature Net Association (FNN) in collaboration with various partners, the program is supported by IFAD and the European Union (EU).
Key Success Highlights:
• Income Growth via Technology: Farmers have transitioned to climate-resilient techniques, such as net houses for vegetable production. This has allowed them to earn a steady monthly profit (averaging $300) by producing high-quality, safe vegetables.
• Market Linkages & Contract Farming: The project successfully linked Agricultural Cooperatives (ACs) to stable markets, including school feeding programs and supermarkets. This ensures guaranteed prices and consistent demand for crops and poultry.
• Empowering Agricultural Cooperatives (ACs): ACs have seen significant growth in membership and capital. Capacity building in business planning and financial management has turned these cooperatives into professional and sustainable rural enterprises.
• Gender and Youth Inclusion: With women making up approximately 64% of the membership, the program has empowered them to take on leadership roles. Youth are also engaging in innovative farming as a profitable alternative to migration.
• Diversified Livelihoods: Beyond traditional rice farming, the introduction of new income sources—such as cricket raising and selling fresh chicken meat—has significantly boosted household resilience and rural employment.
Future Outlook:
FNN and its partners remain committed to expanding educational programs, advocating for farmer-friendly policies, and strengthening the network of agricultural cooperatives to ensure food sovereignty and sustainable development in Cambodia.
